DAY #30- 30 DAY LOW FAT RAW VEGAN CHALLENGE

If you have been following my 30 day challenge you will already know that I never made it to day 30. I would like to share my experiences in a little more detail.

DAY 1-14

For the first two weeks of my challenge I felt AMAZING! I had incredible energy and was loving the way I was eating. At this point I was satisfied by all of my meals and I made sure that I was getting 2,500-3,000 calories per day. My skin was not getting better (acne) but I kept the faith that it would.

DAY 14-17

My skin began to clear up and I was still enjoying all meals and feeling amazing!

DAY 18

I had a craving for more so I went to Rawlicious and stocked up on some delicious raw vegan meals. At that point I was planning on leaving for banana island the next day (BI) so I did not mind and called it my 'cheat day'.

DAY 19-24

I ate 30 bananas a day for 4.5 days. I enjoyed doing this for the most part. I was planning on doing it for 10 days but then I was beginning to get some unwanted symptoms and decided to leave the island after they persisted. I ended up going to Raw Aura and once again had some delicious raw vegan foods. I felt somewhat sad that I could not complete my 10 days on BI, but at the same time my symptoms disappeared within hours, and so I knew I made the right decision. I then decided to put an end to my 80/10/10 for the time being.

DO I RECOMMEND THE 80/10/10?

- I lost 10 pounds in 23 days while eating 2,500-3,000 calories per day!
- I 110% recommend reading the book as it was very educational and made me realize the importance of having less fat in my vegan diet.
- I also recommend trying this way of eating for at least a week, just to show yourself how great you can feel!!
- I do not have anything against banana island, but if I were to do it again I probably would just do it for 2 days to clean out my system.
- I have come to believe that by eating the 80/10/10 way there is no need to ever go on a cleanse or detox diet because the diet itself is toxin free.
- I highly recommend reading The China Study because it was mind blowing!

DAY #23 - 30 DAY LOW FAT RAW VEGAN CHALLENGE

 BANANAS
 BANANAS
 MISO SOUP
 BIG SALAD
 APPLE CRUMBLE

SUMMARY OF DAY #23

OK so I do not have time to write an essay as I am pooped, but let me explain. I ended up leaving BI at dinner today. I started having potential symptoms of candida and it freaked me out so I decided to go back to 80/10/10. Then I thought some more and decided that as much as I enjoyed my 23 days of 80/10/10, I am fine with going back to a regular vegan diet. I LOVED the 80/10/10 way of living and certainly can see myself eating that way again :) As for now, I am happy to eat some delicious cooked vegan food.

 BREAKFAST
 LUNCH
DINNER
SUMMARY OF DAY #22

STILL LOVIN' BANANAS! I thought that I would be sick of them by now, but no way! I cannot get enough :) I have zero complaints today, just another wonderful day on Banana Island. At this point I am debating how long I will stay on BI. I am debating between 5, 7 and 10 days. I miss my salads!

DAY #21 - 30 DAY LOW FAT RAW VEGAN CHALLENGE

 BREAKFAST
 LUNCH
DINNER
SUMMARY OF DAY #21

Am I actually enjoying eating this way?
Yes and No. The actual taste of the banana shakes/ice creams are incredible and I certainly enjoy drinking/eating them. I miss my jumbo salads and other fruits! I look forward to eating a variety of colours again.

Why am I staying on BI for 10 days? Some people go to BI for much longer than 10 days, but I decided that one week was too short and I was willing to give it a go for 10 days. I want reap the benefits that so many talk about after being on the island for a period of time. My biggest excitement is to see if my skin will clear up. It was beginning to clear up after 15 days of 80/10/10 but after my cheat day last week I broke out big time!

DAY #20 - 30 DAY LOW FAT RAW VEGAN CHALLENGE

 BREAKFAST = 10 BANANAS
 LUNCH = 10 BANANAS
DINNER = 10 BANANAS
SUMMARY OF DAY #20

I used to think 30 bananas was an insane amount of bananas but I could easily have 60 a day! 30 bananas is approximately 3,000calories and I know it is important to get enough calories to survive on Banana Island. I feel really good today and have loads of energy! I prefer eating bananas with a spoon or drinking them instead of chewing them. I will not lie and say this is easy, but I am sure looking forward to saying that it was worth it :)

DAY #19 - 30 DAY LOW FAT RAW VEGAN CHALLENGE

SUMMARY OF DAY #19

30 bananas later and I am feeling great :)

After lunch I was a grumpy grump! I actually despise eating bananas in their most natural form, and I ate 10, it was yuck! I feel the opposite about my banana ice cream! I cannot get enough of it :D I may bring my banana ice cream to work and pop it in the freezer so I do not have to go through eating 10 bananas like that again!

7 BANANAS & 10 DATES
 10 ORANGES
 STRAWBERRIES
 DATES

OREO SHAKE
PIZZA
SOFT TACOS & SALAD
JUMBO SALAD

SUMMARY OF DAY #18

Today was a very different. Today turned out to be a 'cheat' day. Tomorrow I am going to banana island for ten days, so I allowed myself to splurge today :P I had a typical 80/10/10 breakfast, lunch, snack and then splurged on dinner. I went to Rawlicious and got an oreo smoothie, pizza, and a soft taco with salad. Honestly, it was delicious! I loved every bite.  I will also add that it was the first time I tasted the amount of salt and other flavourings in the food. Rawlicious is a wonderful raw vegan restaurant that I consider to be one of the healthiest, if not THE HEALTHIEST, restaurant you can go to. At the same time, I have been eating cleaner than ever on the 80/10/10 so I noticed a huge different when eating raw gourmet.

I mentioned that I am heading to banana island tomorrow for 10 entire days! Some people do a water fast, some people do a cayenne, lemon and maple syrup fast, but I am doing a banana cleanse :) This is part of my 80/10/10--- 30 day challenge, and I am looking forward to seeing how I benefit from this much talked about island.

DAY #17 - 30 DAY LOW FAT RAW VEGAN CHALLENGE

 BANANA ICE CREAM
 ORANGES & BANANAS
 STRAWBERRIES
JUMBO SALAD

SUMMARY OF DAY #17

Today just may have been the first day that I craved cooked food. I found myself constantly thinking of many incredible cooked and even just high fat raw vegan dishes that I have made. I realized that the reason why I am having this cravings is simply because I have not been eating enough calories. I have been having approximately 2,500 calories per day, but seeing as how I am an active person I should really be eating more. I will make sure that I eat more tomorrow :)

I am almost done reading "The China Study" by T.C.Campbell. Once again I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in optimal health. The last thing that I plan on quoting from the book is just a list of Campbell's 8 PRINCIPLES OF FOOD & HEALTH: (p.226-238)

 1.  Nutrition represents the combined activities of countless food substances. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

2. Vitamin supplements are not a panacea for good health.

3.  There are virtually no nutrients in animal-based foods that are not better provided by plants.

4. Genes do not determine disease on their own. Genes function only by being activated, or expressed, and nutrition plays a critical role in determining which genes, good and bad, are expressed.

5. Nutrition can substantially control the adverse effects of noxious chemicals.

6. The same nutrition that prevents disease in its early stages (before diagnosis) can also halt or reverse disease in its later stages (after diagnosis).

7. Nutrition that is truly beneficial for one chronic disease will support health across the board.

8. Good nutrition creates health in all areas of our existence. All parts are interconnected.

DAY #16 - 30 DAY LOW FAT RAW VEGAN CHALLENGE

 HONEYDEW
 7 BANANAS
 BANANA & DATE PUDDIN'
APPLE PIE & ALMOND BUTTER

SUMMARY OF DAY #16

TOTAL CALORIES: I have decided to stop counting calories. From what I continue to learn about eating this way is that YOU DO NOT NEED TO COUNT CALORIES :) After counting calories for 15 days I have a pretty good idea of how much I need to eat in order to make sure I am getting enough :D

MY SKIN IS CLEARING UP!!!! My skin started to clear up yesterday but I wanted to wait and see if it continued today before I mentioned it. I have a feeling it was detoxing with a combination of hormones. All that matters is the present moment, and presently my skin is clearing :) Patience pays off!

I did not have a my salad today and I MISS IT! I went nuts on dates today and feel way too full to eat a salad at this point, but I am craving one. Tomorrow I'll just have to have an even BIGGER salad :)

THE CHINA STUDY by T. Colin Campbell
I highly recommend everyone to read this book because it is so informative and certainly gives me the motivation and knowledge I need to live a healthy lifestyle. I will be quoting the book and highlighting some facts that I find very important, but please realize that this book so too good to just skim through and I will not be rewriting the book on my blog.

PART II: DISEASES OF AFFLUENCE
CHAPTER #5: Broken Hearts
- Evidence continues to show that a plant based diet is good for the prevention of cancers as well as heart disease.
- This chapter does a great job at explaining how heart attacks develop and more importantly proof from studies as to how they can be prevented.
- One studies results: " forty-nine coronary events prior to a whole foods, plant based diet, and zero events for those patients who adhered to a whole foods, plant-based diet." (p. 129)
- "There is no greater disrespect a doctor can show patients that that of withholding potentially lifesaving information based on the assumption that patients do not want to change their lifestyle." (p. 131)
- Three other profound doctors who advocate for a plant based diet: Dr. William Castelli, Dr. Esselstyn and Dr. Ornish.

CHAPTER #4: Lessons from China
- "Good health is about being able to fully enjoy the time we do have. It is about being as functional as possible throughout our entire lives and avoiding crippling, painful and lengthy battles with disease. There are many better ways to die, and to live." (p.75)
- high cholesterol is linked to heart disease as well as cancer
- animal based foods increase blood cholesterol, and plant foods decrease blood cholesterol
- huge link between animal based foods and breast cancer
- more fiber = more iron and lower level of blood cholesterol
- only way to protect ourselves from free radicals is by eat fruits and veggies
- healthiest diet = high carb, low protein, low fat
- "From a boyhood of drinking at least two quarts of milk a day to an early professional career of scoffing at vegetarians, I have taken an unusual turn in my life." (p. 107)

SUMMARY OF DAY #13

TOTAL CALORIES: 2,432

I must be 100% honest with everyone. I have NEVER felt happier, more peaceful and more alive. I cannot express in words how grateful I am to have come across this rewarding way of living. This way of living has not been difficult for me for one second. I have tried many different ways of eating, diets, and strategies to be healthy and feel my best. Nothing I have tried in the past, including cooked vegan and raw vegan, has come close to the way I feel when I eat a Low Fat Raw Vegan Diet. Now I know what it means to THRIVE.  I am so very grateful and hope to inspire others to just try this way of living so that they may at least have the opportunity to experience this bliss.

THE CHINA STUDY by T. Colin Campbell
I read a couple more chapters from this book and have learned so much.

CHAPTER 2 : A House of Proteins
- Protein is VERY important for our health, we need it to grow and survive.
- Animals proteins are the 'best' source of protein for our bodies next to human protein. BUT studies show that animal proteins are harmful to our health and thus the best source of healthy protein for our bodies comes from fruits and vegetables. "...there is a mountain of compelling research showing that "low-quality" plant protein, which allows for slow but steady synthesis of new proteins, is the healthiest type of protein. Slow but steady wins the race." (p.31)
- Beware of peanut butter, learn about where it comes from, make sure your source is healthy. "The best peanuts, which filled "cocktail" jars, were hand selected from a moving conveyor belt, leaving the worst, moldiest nuts to be delivered to the end of the belt to make peanut butter." (p.35) ---contains high levels of a toxic fungus (aflatoxin) which has been linked to cancer and is said to be the "most potent chemical carcinogen ever discovered."(p. 34)
- "Namely, the children who got liver cancer were from the best-fed families. The families with the most money ate what we thought were the healthiest diets, the diets most like our own meaty American diets. They consumed more protein than anyone else in the country (high quality animal protein, at that), and yet they were the ones getting liver cancer!"(p.36)

CHAPTER 3: Turning Off Cancer
- Incredible chapter! I have learned so much about cancer, how it forms and how it can be prevented!
- Low-protein diets reduce tumors. (plant-based protein)
- Plant protein does not promote cancer growth, even at high levels of intake, but animal protein does even at low levels. (p.59)

DAY #12 - 30 DAY LOW FAT RAW VEGAN CHALLENGE

 2 CANTALOUPE
 7 BANANAS
APPLE & CINNAMON
JUMBO SALAD :)

SUMMARY OF DAY #12

TOTAL CALORIES: 2,413

I just finished my giant dinner :P What I realized a few days ago is that I need to eat dinner much earlier than regular dinner time. Since I go to bed fairly early, 9-9:30ish, I need to make sure my dinner is eaten at least 4 hours before I go to bed. When I was eating dinner at 6ish I had a hard time falling asleep and that was because my body still had so much digesting to do and so I was restless and tossed and turned for hours. Since I have been eating dinner much earlier I am falling asleep just like I used to, head hits the pillow and I'm out!

I have been drinking much more water than usual and thus have been needing to go to the washroom through the night, usually once but sometimes twice. I am not concerned about this because I want to flush all toxins out of my body and water helps with that. However, I will try to stop drinking water at least 2 hours before to go to sleep so that I do not have a full bladder.

My skin has continued to break out, big time. I know that hormones could be playing a role in my skin condition right now, but I was getting worried as to how much my skin was breaking out so I did some research online. Most people who begin the 811LFRV go through a big detox stage, and most toxins exit the body through your skin. I will give my body more time to cleanse and try not to let it get to me. I have been loving everything about eating this way, the only downfall thus far has been my breakouts and thus the pros outweigh the cons by far so I will carry on with my 30 days :)

THE CHINA STUDY - T.Colin Campbell

"Two of the most frightening statistics show that diabetes among people in their thirties has increased 70% in less than ten years and the percentage of obese people has nearly doubled in the past thirty years." (p.14)

*Heart disease is the number 1 killer in our culture. This is how my dad died, long before his time, and I will make sure that I do everything I can to share the knowledge I have gained to help those who want to live a healthy lifestyle. "The most dramatic recent finding is that heart disease can be prevented and even reversed by a healthy diet." (healthy NOT meaning the SAD- Standard American Diet)

"If you are only interested in a two-week menu plan to lose weight, then this book is not for you. I am appealing to your intelligence, not to your ability to follow a recipe or menu plan. I want to offer you a more profound and beneficial way to view health. I have a prescription for maximum health that is simple, easy to follow and offers more benefits than any drug or surgery, without any of the side effects. This prescription isn't merely a menu plan; it doesn't require daily charts or calorie counting; and it doesn't exist to serve my own financial interests. Most importantly, the supporting evidence is overwhelming. This is about changing the way you eat and live and the extraordinary health that will result." (p.21)

"The science is there and it must be made known. We cannot let the status quo go unchallenged and watch our loved ones suffer unnecessarily. It is time to stand up, clear the air and take control of our health." (p.25)

SUMMARY OF DAY #11

TOTAL CALORIES: 2,342

Another great day of health and happiness. Grateful.

I just started reading "The China Study" and have never been more excited about reading a book!  I have only read a few pages but already feel as though this book should be a mandatory read. All I knew about the book before reading it was that Dr. Douglas Graham mentions it in his books, and that it was the largest research study based on diet and its correlation to disease. After reading the first few pages I know this book is based on true facts, honest research and written by a man who has a great passion to share the code for health and happiness.

NOTE: "The China Study" was written by a man who grew up on a milk farm and went to vet school to study how to increase the growth of animals so that our farming system could get us a greater amount of protein so that we may reach optimal health. During his quest, T. Colin Campbell, soon realized that he was headed in the wrong direction and after 27 years of research he is able to prove that animal products are harmful to our health.

"If you want to eat bacon and eggs for breakfast and then take cholesterol-lowering medication, that's your right. But if you want to truly take charge of your health, read The China Study, and do it soon!" (Foreward, The China Study)

MAIN RESULTS OF THE CHINA STUDY:
"People who ate the most animal-based foods got the most chronic disease. Even relatively small intakes of animal-based food were associated with adverse effects. People who ate the most plant-based foods were the healthiest and tended to avoid chronic disease." (p. 7, The China Study)
