FACT: REFINED SUGAR IS POISON


      Today is Halloween. Today is the day that millions of children get dressed up and go door-to-door with one purpose only, to get as much candy as they can fit into their bag, bucket, pillow case or wagon! Wait, I forgot to mention the fact that Halloween is celebrated at school too! Today children are at school and they get to bring in candy and share it with the class, all organized and moderated by their teachers, educated adults.  

    Children are innocent and unaware that the candy that they receive is poison in its tastiest form. Sadly, many adults are unaware of this too.

    I was also unaware of how harmful refined sugar was until I read "Sugar Blues" 5 years ago.  It took me 5 years to give up this substance that I can assure you I was addicted to. I have never felt healthier! There are many alternatives to refined sugar that taste just as great and in my opinion even BETTER! This is an incredible book and I recommend it to anyone and everyone

1. APPEARANCE - This is the #1 reason why most people exercise, to have less fat and be more toned. Looks are not as important as having a healthy body that is in shape and able to do the physical things humans are meant to be able to do, such as walking.

SWEET POTATO SALAD

     I am a potato lover! I absolutely could not live without them. I am an even bigger fan of sweet potatoes. This is a great recipe for Fall because of the ingredients and colours. If you want to be even more festive you could use red quinoa and use a mix of red and yellow peppers to bring out the colour of the leaves.


INGREDIENTS
Salad
- 1/2 cup of sweet potato, chopped and steamed
- 1/2 cup quinoa
- 1 cup of red pepper chopped  
Dressing
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp squeezed lemon 
- pinch of cayenne pepper 
PREPARATION
1.  Combine all ingredients in bowl and mix.

RAW CREAMY PESTO PASTA

     Creamy Pesto Pasta, YUM! This is a very simple RAW vegan recipe. RAW simply means that the ingredients have not been cooked. If you wish to warm up the cream sauce and eat it on a bed of brown rice noodles then that would surely taste just as great!  


Part 1: Pesto

INGREDIENTS
- 2 cup basil leaves (packed)
- 1/2 cup walnuts
- 1/2 cup olive oil
- 4 cloves garlic
- 1 tsp lemon juice

PREPARATION
1.  Combine all ingredients in food processor and blend.
2.  Storage: You may freeze the pesto in an ice cube tray and once frozen you can transfer it to another container so that you can thaw out the amount you want when the time comes.

 Part 2: Pesto Cream Sauce

INGREDIENTS
- 1/2 cup cashews (soaked for 3 hours)
- 1/3 cup water
- 4 tbsp pesto 
- pinch of himalayan salt 

PREPARATION
1. Combine all ingredients in food processor and blend. 
2. Garnish with dried basil. 


PEACE & TAKING OWNERSHIP

     Putting the blame on others is one of the biggest mistakes we can make and is detrimental to our own health. When we blame others for unfortunate circumstances or events in our life or in the world, we are giving them 'power' over us and taking away our own 'power' which is necessary to make positive changes. 

     On the contrary, when we take ownership for each and every choice we make as well as the actions we take, then we are aware that if things do not go as planned it is up to us to make the changes.

     At first it may seem easier to blame our nutritionist for gaining weight, our teacher for failing a test, our parents for our poor relationship skills or our partner for cheating on us. It tends to be easier because once we blame someone else we automatically believe that it is no longer our problem and that the other person needs to fix things or they will be replaced.

WHY VEGAN?

     This is by far the best speech I have ever heard. Before I heard this speech I was vegan purely for selfish reasons. Why am I vegan now? Simply for animal rights and to help others become aware. 
     This contents of this speech is very difficult to hear. If you decide to take action make sure it is done in such a way that others are not offended or upset with your approach.

RAW ZUCCHINI BOLOGNESE

       I love pasta! Before I became a gluten-free vegan I would always order pasta on the menu, or even cook pasta at least 4 nights a week! Pasta is an easy meal to prepare and is still one of my 'go to' meals when in need of a quick meal. I still eat brown rice pasta with beans and tomato sauce, but this recipe is for those who like it RAW! *** IT IS AMAZING!***


INGREDIENTS
- one small red pepper
- 1/2 of a mango
- 1 zucchini
- 1 tbsp dried basil
- 1/4 cup of sun dried tomatoes
- nut-loaf (optional)
PREPARATION
1. Use a spiralizer to make noodles out of the zucchini.
2. Blend red pepper, mango, sun-dried tomatoes and basil in a food processor. 
3. Crumble nut-loaf on top.  
* If you do not have a spiralizer then use a peeler and make long thin noodles out of the zucchini. 
 * Need a meal with more calories? Add more fresh vegetables such as mushrooms and cherry tomatoes! 

* The nut-loaf is optional but I highly recommend it! If you do not have a nut-loaf recipe then use a food processor and chop up some walnuts and pine nuts and throw them on top! YUM!

SOME LIKE IT HOT

    I feel great! Just got back from the sauna, a great post workout treat! One thing I have learned is that it is important to drink lots of water before going into the sauna, especially after working out. Today it is COLD, CLOUDY and RAINY, what better way to counteract crappy weather than going into a sauna?!

GREEN SMOOTHIE


    For the past 2 months I have been having a green smoothie every morning and I LOVE IT! For me, a green smoothie is a great protein boost for my vegan diet. 

    A green smoothie is a smoothie that is blended with fresh leafy green vegetables such as kale, collards and spinach. Green smoothies are super healthy because they contain leafy green vegetables which are said to be healthiest food on the planet! Leafy greens are full of fiber, vitamins, minerals, and plant-based substances that have been proven to protect against many diseases and ailments. Most people like to add fruit to their green smoothies to make them sweeter and tastier! 



INGREDIENTS
- 1/2 banana (frozen)
- 2 kiwi
- 1 cup collard greens
- 1 cup water
- 1 scoop of organic raw hemp protein powder 

 PREPARATION
1. Place all ingredients in blender and blend.

      I love starting each day with a large mug of green tea! I do not like putting nut milks or sweeteners in my tea, and I find green tea to be great tasting without any additives. My absolute favourite loose-leaf green tea is from David's Tea "Organic Detox Green Tea". (contains: rooibos, sencha green tea, ginger, lemongrass, ginkgo, juniper berries and natural lemon flavouring) When I run out of my loose leaf tea I have packaged organic green tea to tide me over until I purchase some more. There are so many health benefits of green tea. Green tea in the morning is comforting and soothing and I couldn't imagine a morning without it!

MOTIVATION FOR HEALTHY LIVING

        Healthy living can be difficult if you do not have the motivation necessary to continuously make healthy choices. First things first, you need to figure out why you want to live a healthy lifestyle. What is your motivation for living healthy? Do you want to lose weight? Do you want to look good in a bathing suit? Do you want to heal your mind, body and spirit? Do you want to feel energetic and lively? Do you want to look and feel younger? Whatever your reasons may be, you need to make sure you are aware of your reasons and be able to constantly remind yourself why healthy choices are important to you. You may want to put up pictures and phrases around your house that will motivate you to take the actions necessary to make the right choices to allow yourself to be the person you want to be and feel the way you want to.

      This site is not about dieting, this site is about making positive changes in your daily routine to help you feel and look your best!
